Meet Katherine Kwei

We are thrilled to bring you one more special interview with a wonderful purse designer. Sari brown from Lux Couture introduced me to Katherine Kwei designs. Sari as well as I are so intrigued by the delicate knotting method that makes Katherine Kwei styles stand out. So while in new York City Vlad as well as I were able to satisfy Katherine Kwei as well as her assistant designer, Tiffany Koo (who will be working on a line for Katherine Kwei), as well as we have not been able to stop raving about her bags since. Do not expect a simple bag from her designs, for her purses implement a knotting method that will certainly make her stand out from the rest. We sat down in her show space to talk about her purse line as well as get to understand the designer behind these wonderful handbags.

PB: tell us about your fashion background?

KK: As a kid I did a great deal of arts as well as crafts. I went to Cornell as well as I had the choice of being an environmental science major or fine arts major. My father told me that I might do fine arts as a hobby, to ensure that type of threw that concept out the door! After institution I landed a task at Louis Vuitton as well as I landed a task in pr with them. That was my begin into the fashion world. I was with Louis Vuitton for four years in Hong Kong. At the time Marc Jacobs had not joined Louis Vuitton so there was a big focus on handbags, it was just bags bags bags. We did a big China exhibition to introduce the business into China in the late 1990’s as well as we tried to inform people on the brand as well as history of Louis Vuitton. That is exactly how my purse like started.

I decided to go back to institution at the London college of Fashion. This is the exact same institution Jimmy Choo went to as well as it is extremely famous for leatherwork. I did three years there as well as ended up with a master’s degree in accessories design. I came to new York City then as well as did an internship with Zac Posen, however realized that I wished to begin my own line.

PB: So you have both experience on a personal level as well as academic background?

KK: I am a bit bit old fashioned; I believe you requirement to have the degree. I desired the technical experience to discover exactly how the purses are constructed.

PB: Do you want to branch out from handbags?

KK: I may go the path of doing accessories for accessories, as in appeals for the bags. I like so many other designers that I feel like I have nothing to offer in terms of clothing!

PB: who do you have in mind when designing your bags?

KK: I have designed many of my bags for my friends. then again, my mom as well as her buddies are always looking for my bags. So it is for a lady who wants something different however practical.

PB: What is your branding image?

KK: The knots are my image. I stay with this rather than logos. I have youth memories of my grandma practicing the ancient Chinese art of knotting. Also, I line the inside of my bags in red suede.

PB: The knotting is so complex! Is it done by hand?

KK: Yes, they have to be hand knotted. I teach anyone working on my bags the knotting method myself. It is rather time consuming! From begin to surface a few of the bags may take between 10-15 hours. I do ask them to do a slight braid on the back too. The Swarovski crystals are hand punched. So whatever is done by hand for the most part.

PB: You have resided in a plethora of wonderful cities. What took you to all of these places?

KK: My father was an worldwide banker so we were transferred about every three years. I have resided in cities such as Athens, London, Dubai, Hong Kong, as well as new York.

PB: With all of the traveling, what is your preferred city in the world?

KK: Hong Kong. I was born there as well as my parents still online there. likewise my production is there, so I spend much of my time there.

PB: What do you indulge in?

KK: deal with CREAM! I utilize Jurlique. It is expensive, however I am addicted to deal with cream.

PB: What is the last movie you saw?

KK: We just saw Gone infant Gone. It was incredible, it was super intense as well as extremely real.

PB: provide us an interested fact!

Well, I just got engaged! So I am truly happy about that!

PB: What on the internet stores bring your bags?

KK: You can go with Katherine Kwei online, or active Endeavors, Lux Couture, as well as 20 Unlimited.

We completed up the interview as well as while Vlad snapped pictures, Katherine, Tiffany, as well as I browsed the show room. We drooled over a yellow leather Kooba jacket as well as chatted about fashion, life, as well as the quick speed of nyc compared to the rest of the world! We had a fantastic time satisfying Kathy as well as be on the look out for more wonderful styles from her in the future!

Céline’s Pre-Fall 2018 Bags are Here—Check Out the Brand’s Last Collection before Hedi Slimane Takes Over

Phoebe Philo’s world at Céline will end not with a bang, but with a whimper—or, really, more of a whisper, as handbags go. which makes perfect sense; while runway clothes might come and go seasonally, handbags usually last over an arc of at least several seasons, which means that when a designer knows that she and her deputies will be departing, it doesn’t make much sense from either a creative or logistical perspective to launch something new and then right away hand the reins to other people. In this case, the person arriving to fill Philo’s shoes is Hedi Slimane, and his view of the Céline woman will almost certainly diverge greatly from the brand we know now. So, no use in doing too many new things now, especially in bags.

That means that our first look at Céline’s Pre-Fall 2018 collection, which has now hit boutiques and the brand’s website, is filled with a lot of familiar favorites from the years of Philo’s enormously successful tenure at the brand, including many colors of Trio Bags, Luggage Totes, Belt Bags, Cabas Totes and more, as well as new iterations of the big Bag line that launched for spring. If you’re looking for one last piece of Philo’s legacy, there are plenty of options to choose from over the next couple months. most of these designs will continue on under Slimane for the next couple seasons at least, but this is the last collection where she was officially at the helm.

The only totally new bag to be found in this collection is the Made In Tote, which comes in three sizes and two materials (leather and textile), both bearing a large version of the Céline logo and origin stamp that’s usually found in tiny gold print on the brand’s leather bags. The totes are simple and unsubtle, and they feel like both a clear statement of what the brand stands for and a perfectly loud logo piece that fits what much of fashion’s elite wants right now. So maybe I was wrong, maybe it is a bang.

Check out all of the new Made In Totes, plus a selection of the season’s other new options below. You can view the full collection via Céline.

Chloe Marcie Bag

I continue to see the Chloe Marcie Bag on both Katie Holmes and Jessica Alba, which prompted another look at the latest hit from Chloe. every time I see a Chloe bag or even their logo, the initial thought that pops into my mind is the weight of the bag. anybody who has owned the once coveted Paddington knows that the weight of the bag was a talking point. Rightfully so, as the leather of the bag was very thick and heavy and the signature padlock sent the weight of the bag over-the-top. So when we are introduced to a new Chloe bag, I have a hard time putting aside past thoughts and looking at it with a clean slate.

But I will try. When Amanda first reviewed the Marcie it was the hobo version, she gave it a positive review. and here comes another positive review, because the larger version, which I keep spotting on the celebs, is also a stunning bag. The lines are clean and sleek, yet rounded and feminine. I love how the wrapped-detail deal with adds a new dimension. and with fall relying on camel and neutral hued colors, this bag is a ideal option. I kind of love it and I never feel like Chloe lets anybody down with the quality of their materials. purchase via net A porter for $1,790.

(Re)Introducing the Loewe Amazona Bag

Every major luxury fashion house has a handbag line or specific silhouette that is a brand signifier, and for Loewe, it’s arguably the Amazona. though the Puzzle bag has become synonymous with the Loewe brand and creative director Johnathon Anderson in recent years, the Amazona is a true brand signature, with a history dating back to the 70s.

Originally launched in 1975, the iconic Amazona is reimagined for the fall 2021 season, just in time to celebrate the brand’s 175th anniversary. now available in new materials and dimensions with a renewed focus on advanced craftsmanship, news of the Amazona’s revival broke when Loewe cancelled its fall runway show. Today, we’re taking a detailed look at the all-new Amazona.

Construction and Materials

The Amazona was originally designed in 1975, named after female warriors of Greek Mythology, and today it is reimagined with the dimensions of modern electronics in mind. The revival features a structured but soft shape with clean lines, designed to be both fashionable and functional with a padlock, protective metal feet, interior pockets, and a detachable shoulder strap. It’s incredibly lightweight, making it the perfect everyday carry.

Arriving in bright, bold hues for fall, the Amazona is available in both smooth Nappa calfskin as well as Loewe’s signature Anagram jacquard. since its inception, Loewe has been known for its attention to detail, and its core values and storied craftsmanship are reflected in the Amazona.

Sizing and Dimensions

There are two sizes of the new Amazona, the 19 Square and the 28. While both sizes feature a detachable strap and one main compartment with plenty of interior space, the 28 is the way to go if you’re constantly on the move with a lot of stuff to carry. We took a look at the 19 Square in smooth lagoon blue calfskin as well as navy/black jacquard, which has overall dimensions of 8.25″ W x 7″ H x 4″ D. as for the Amazona 28, it has overall dimensions of 11.5″ W x 7″ H x 4″ D. It’s shown here in avocado green jacquard.

Price and Availability

The Amazona 19 is available in Nappa Calfskin for $2,990 and in jacquard for $2,650 via LOEWE.

The Amazona 28 is available in Nappa calfskin for $3,450 and jacquard for $2,990 via LOEWE.

PurseBlog Asks: would You use a handbag Raincoat?

A lot of you responded with your own tales of woe when Megs wrote about getting caught in the rain with her pale pink Givenchy Antigona, so I expect it shouldn’t surprise anybody that The handbag Raincoat exist and is available to purchase at Shopbop in three sizes. The much more I think about it, though, the much more I can’t hate on it.

At first, my reaction was snarky. who in the world would pay 30 bucks to keep their purses dry while they spring into the grocery store? Except, of course, lots of people would do that. maybe even me, if you caught me in the best mood. The idea is unpleasantly high-maintenance, but the execution is pretty practical, especially if you’re someone who spends a lot of money on bags. (Hi. You’ve come to the best place.)

The product itself works just like it looks like it does: you pop it over your bag and the handles poke out the top opening, which is adjustable with velcro. Water can still make its way into the space between the handles, but the large majority of your bag is covered. When you’re not using the bag-coat, it stores in a little pouch that will float to the bottom of your purse, completely forgotten until you need it. like I said: purchasing a handbag raincoat may not be the image of yourself that you want to project to others, but this one seems pretty functional if you choose satchels or totes.

I’m not sure that I’m organized enough to use one of these, if I actually purchased it. It’d probably end up like my fabric grocery bags: acquired with good intentions but left at home in all situations in which it might be useful. could you see yourself purchasing and using a handbag raincoat?

If you could, you’re in luck: all three sizes are available at Shopbop for $25, $28 or $30.

Dear Millie: Months Eighteen and Nineteen

Dear Millie,

I have some pals that celebrate their kids’ half birthdays, and some of them even have photoshoots and cakes. The day came and went for you, no big celebration, but it doesn’t mean that I didn’t note it in my head and think how crazy life is that you were sitting between your first and second birthdays. While I say I remember you being little, I also don’t. It is all a sort of blur, and now this very independent and active version of you is all that I really know. Your personality continues to be what it always has been: stubborn, strong, easy-going, and independent. and it’s only becoming more apparent.

You want to be outside all day, every day. The heat in Florida has hit the intolerable stage where even if we are out at 8am, I am profusely sweating (and I don’t really sweat!). You don’t care, and it is all you want to do. during the day you run to the back door and say “Side! Side!” begging to go out. When I drive by the park and don’t stop, which you somehow are able to notice, you cry uncontrollably. Honestly, you rarely cry and the first time this happened, I thought something was seriously wrong with you, like your finger was pinched in your car seat. I pulled over and got out to check on you, only to realize that it upset you on the deepest level that I dared to drive by the park and not stop for you to get out and play. The swing is still your favorite, but you have no worry making your way up to the big kid slides. You mostly want to drop sticks and other things down the slide and then either make your way down the slide or climb back down the play set. You also want to climb trees.

You have no worry of water, which is both great and terrifying, especially living somewhere like South Florida. We just started swim lessons with you (later than I originally wanted), and you love it so far! I figured you would—you are obsessed with baths and the pool. I went back and forth about what kind of lessons I wanted for you and wound up with something more traditional. everyone laughs at me and your daddy because we were competitive swimmers—you’d think we would teach you to swim ourselves. but it’s much easier having someone else do the parts where I would inevitably be too easy on you. We have to stay inside and watch from there, and that barrier was already enough to make me practically flip out—I didn’t think I’d be this mom, but here I am. You, however, are fine. No tears, doing great, and always making me laugh because I anticipate things that simply aren’t going to happen with you. You’re stubborn and strong-willed personality shows in your swim lessons, because you show zero worry of the water and don’t follow the directions of your instructor very well sometimes. You drop off the side of the wall when you’re supposed to be holding on and sink to the bottom of the pool and then try to swim to your teacher. When she gets you up, I always think you’ll be crying, but you laugh. It is funny and terrifying how comfortable you are in the water, and it shows how strong your personality is to do what you want when you want, even in new, unchartered territories like the pool.

You’ve been talking so much more and your words continue to be mostly animals and random, not-really-“usable” words. You don’t ask for food or specific items, you just tell me about birds, rain, babies, and turtles. When there’s any sort of animal that we’ve taught you growls, you ROAR the loudest ROAR ever. At story time, when they read “Brown Bear,” your bear growl scares the other kids. It’s adorable and hilarious. You have a mix of both English and German words, which makes your daddy so proud (you switched from calling him dada to dadddddyyyy). also you started calling me mom-mom and it makes my heart melt so hard that I will do whatever you’d like at that moment!

You aren’t the cuddliest baby, but when you get up in the morning the first thing you do is come to our bed to nurse and then spend time with us. You love pointing to my eyes, nose, mouth, head, and ears. You then proceed to do the same to your daddy to wake him up. Our bed is one of your favorite places and you run there before your nap, after your nap, and before bed as well. I love that you feel so safe and comforted in our house and room, and it’s become some of my favorite times of day to try to get you still enough to cuddle with you in bed.

The past two months have been a bit crazy and, per usual, you keep us on our toes. We spent three days in the medical facility because the doctors thought you might be having seizures. everything checked out okay, and it was a feeling of such relief for us—and you, my silly child, per usual reminded me that every situation is what we make of it. You made the medical facility stay feel like a vacation, delighted to meet new people and explore the halls when you weren’t hooked up to monitors. We played in the playroom and took you around in a wagon, which you thought was the coolest thing ever. I am again reminded with every health issue that you have faced, ultimately, how lucky we have been, and so many others aren’t. I still am working to find a way to give back that is more meaningful than what we’ve done in the past, and I believe I can come up with something because of this platform and promise you and everyone that I will.

I am sure I am missing so much about you in these letters. There are so many little things that make you, you. We still both try our best to juggle the work and personal life, to be sure to spend as much time as possible with you while also getting our work done. We love the job and community that we’ve built and it makes us both feel so pleased to know that we are able to provide for you and our little family (and team!). but most days we just want to sit back and play with you and watch you discover and explore. The days sometimes go slow but the time passes so fast, and we don’t want to miss out. watching you learn something new, which happens daily, makes me so pleased I can’t even discuss it to you. I am so proud of the little human you are becoming. You are loving and patient with all people and inquisitive and kind. Every single day I wake up and look forward to getting you out of bed, bringing you into our bed to snuggle and tell stories, and spending the day with you.

I truly love you more than I knew was possible.

Love,

Mama
